Magazine Advert Analysis

For this part of my research and planning I will be analysing a magazine advert for a rock album. I decided to stick closely to the genre of our music video, in order to grasp concepts and conventions which I can then apply to my own magazine advert. Below is an image of the magazine advert I will be analysing. I will be breaking up the analysis into five or so categories, which includes an overall analysis; this will help me to decide which particular aspects have influenced the overall theme of the magazine advert.

GENERAL ANALYSE The main reason of this magazine cover is to advertise the bands release of their album. This is done effectively by the use of font, the information is displayed in the foreground of the cover which makes it one of the main view points of audiences. The general mood of the magazine advert is sad and gloomy, a number of factors help to convey this including the main image, colour use, character positioning ect. The expressions of the band members are very sad and moody, which helps to fit conventions of rock music. Enigma is built up by the use of props and costume. This magazine is very effective as it draws the attention on the audience, gives the necessary information and presenting it in a clear way and expressing the emotions and feeling of the band and the genre.

FONT There is white font on the top of a black background, the biggest font size are the ones which are showing the album name, release date, and band name. This helps to build up the concept of the magazine cover, which is to promote the album release. The other information which is offered on this magazine advert is in smaller font, as the information is not that important to the whole magazine. The font is very simplistic, which relates with the costume of the magazine advert. There is not much to say about the font style, it is very plain, this could help to represent the band as being laid- back/simple.

CONTENT There is not much information which is offered on this magazine advert. However, the information which is offered is helpful for the audience, as it gives inportant and valuable information about the band.
Release date- 'album out 5th November'
Tour date- 'March/April on tour'
Information on where you can access tour tickets- 'Can buy tickets on http://www.seetickets.com'/
Band Name- 'The Horrors'
Band Album Name - 'Strange House'
COLOUR SCHEME The whole layout of the page had been designed in black and white, the font is bold and white which helps it to stand out to the audience. The use of black and white helps to build up a sad and pessimistic feeling, as well as drawing attention of audiences. The costumes of the band members are also in black and white; this portrays the fact that the band members are quiet dark, as it goes well with use of colour. There is a strong spot light which is positions of the head of boar which is directly above the band member. The lighting used makes the figure become a focus point for audiences, with different opinions and connotation; this could cause enigma and reactions from them
as well.

MAIN IMAGE The main image within the magazine cover is fo the band members sitting on a couch positioned sitting look at the camera, with some of them cross armed. They are all in the mid-ground of the image, with no individual taking up more of the image than another. This illustrates that the people are all members of a band and are equal as individuals. The costume used is all black and white, long trousers and jumpers, several of them hair short shoulder length hair, two of the others have big bold hair, they are all black. This causes an enigma, the band have a mixed style of smart/outgoing which sends different messages out to audiences. The props used in the image also help to build up an enigma; there is a boar head positioned on the wall right behind the band members. This causes enigma as a pig is not normally an animal which people adore/admire, which would be one of the main reasons for having an animal on your wall. As well as not being an animal normally an animal which people adore, this particular animal looks angry and scary. These facts lead to the question of whether this prop was used to signal different meanings/messages.
